Fractures
The force of the birth process can cause fractured bones. In cases where a baby is large and in cases where a mother’s pelvis is narrow, especially, fractures can occur. Broken bones can also occur because medical staff use excessive force when trying to remove the infant from the birth canal. Both the infant and mother can experience broken bones during the birth process.
If you or your infant have experienced a bone fracture during the birth process, you may wonder whether medical negligence has caused the injury. To get answers, you can always contact the Flaxman Law Group. The legal professionals at the Flaxman Law Group can arrange for a free, no obligation consultation so that you can discuss your situation with a personal injury attorney. Your free case evaluation can help you understand whether you have a medical malpractice claim in Miami or your community.
Common Types of FacturesDuring the birth process, the most common fractures include:
- Clavicle fractures. The collarbone, or the clavicle, of an infant can become broken if too much force is used during the birth process or if the baby’s shoulder is stuck during the delivery process. A clavicle fracture is one of the most common types of injuries during birth and in many cases it heals on its own as long as doctors correctly strap the infant’s arm to the chest for a few weeks to limit motion.
- Femur fractures. The femur is the upper thigh bone and in infants it can be fractured during the delivery process if the leg is twisted during labor. This facture is treated by placing the infant in a Pavlik harness for a few weeks.
- Intentional factures. In some cases, doctors will specifically decide to fracture a bone in order to prevent a more serious injury. For example, if an infant is stuck in the birth canal, a doctor may decide that fracturing the clavicle to get the baby out can help prevent a more serious condition, such as a Brachial Plexus Injury.
- Skull fractures. The force of labor and delivery can cause a cranial fracture, a very serious situation which can cause brain injuries and spinal cord injuries to the infant.
Fractures can cause severe pain. In cases where fractures are not detected or treated promptly, they can cause serious complications. For example, bones that have not been properly set after a fracture may grow incorrectly in an infant, leading to a lifetime of pain and injury.
