Eliminating Blind SpotsSince blind spots are so dangerous, it is important to eliminate them in to handle the danger. There are a few ways to do this:
1) Know where blind spots are. The blind spots are typically at the rear end of a car and on both sides. With a truck, SUV, or van, the no zones are much larger and may be at the sides as well as the rear of the vehicle.
2) Adjust your mirrors correctly. Adjust your rearview mirror so that you can clearly see the rearview window in your mirror. Sit in the driver seat to adjust the left side mirror. Place your head against the window and keep adjusting the mirror so that you can see only a small part of your car’s left side in the mirror. While sitting in the driver seat, adjust your right side mirror by leaning into the center of your car seat and continuing to adjust the mirror until you can see only a small part of your car’s right side in the mirror.
3) Get into the habit of checking your blind spots. Even if your mirrors are perfectly adjusted, you will still have blind spots. When changing lanes, turning, or backing up, get into the habit of quickly turning your head to check for anything that may be in your no zones.
4) Consider getting a rear camera. There are cameras that allow you to see perfectly behind your vehicle. This is a very effective way to check to make sure that there aren't any pets, children, or anything else behind your vehicle when you backup. These cameras can cost less than $100 and are a great investment in your safety.
